Namrita looks rather young for a 33-year-old. Petite and pretty, the granddaughter ofu00a0 noted poet-writer Harivansh Rai Bachchan is proud of her roots, and longing to carry the legacy forward. How can one improve upon a masterpiece like Madhushala, you'd wonder. But she's done it in style. In her illustrated interpretation of Harivansh's poetry, compiled in a coffee table book titled 'Madhushala The house of wine', Namrita pays an ode to dadaji on his 102nd birth anniversary in technicolour. And wants to treat you to it.
Meri apni Rai
The young artist, who studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and Parsons in New York, says it's her own comprehension of his world on the canvas, and thus should not be treated as a matter of controversy. "The works are my individual response to my grandfather's art.u00a0 Using my own sense of saturated symbolism, I have recreatedu00a0 Madhushala in my own style," she explains.
Getting to know grandpa
When asked whether working on this project helped her understand Harivansh Rai better, Namrita affirms. "Yes, this gave me an opportunity to delve into his creative world in a deeper way. It allowed me to see the man he was, at 28, when he penned the original work. I was in his footsteps, so could feel him more closely. It was a creative exploration worth every stroke. And after that solitary sojourn into that somber state, it is now wonderful to share my work with everyone. I really regret the fact that I didn't do this whenu00a0 he was still alive.

More about Madhushala
Madhushala is a book of 135 'quatrains': verses of four lines by Hindi poet and writer Harivansh Rai Bachchan (1907-2003). The highly metaphorical work is still celebrated for its deeply Sufi incantations and philosophical undertones and is an important part of the Chhayavaad literary movement of early 20th century Hindi literature.
The poet tries to explain the complexity of life with his four instruments, madhu, madira or haala (wine), saaki (server), pyaala (cup or glass) and madhusala, madiralaya (pub/bar). First published in 1935, the work earned Harivansh Rai Bachchan instant fame.
